Snow Removal Priority Maps

University officials will be closely monitoring campus conditions throughout the weekend. Facilities Services crews have pre-treated and brined primary campus walkways, roads and parking lots. Grounds, Housekeeping, Building Services and Construction Services crews will be coordinating efforts to clear campus routes as soon as possible, but snow clearing priorities will be adjusted based on planned campus events, weather conditions or other circumstances. Due to expected low temperatures, Energy Management Controls System staff are also on campus monitoring building and environmental systems to ensure that they stay online.

Snow Removal Plan

Wednesday, Jan. 11

The University has resumed regular operations. Facilities crews will continue to work across campus to clear snow and slush and widen walking paths.

Tuesday, Jan. 10

UPDATE 2:00 p.m.: All priority/ADA entrances have now been cleared across campus. Please refer to the Snow Removal Priority Map for specific locations and plan routes accordingly.

UPDATE 11:00 a.m.: As the temperature rises, chunks of snow and ice may begin sliding off rooftops. Please be cautious and remain alert if walking near campus buildings.

The University will remain in Condition 2 (Suspended Operations) today until 5 p.m. because of current conditions on campus and area roads. The campus will move to Condition 1 (Reduced Operations) today at 5 p.m, and the University will resume its regular schedule at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Please visit alertcarolina.unc.edu for updates and more information.

The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (OWRR) has suspended operations for Tuesday, Jan. 10. Waste, recycling, and other collections are expected to resume tomorrow, with high traffic and high use buildings being a top priority for trash collection.

Monday, Jan. 9

The University is operating under Condition 2 (Suspended Operations) of its adverse weather plan until further notice. Please visit alertcarolina.unc.edu for updates and more information.

Crews are on campus today working to clear entrances, walkways and parking lots per the Facilities Services Snow Removal Map, but due to extremely low temperatures, progress is slow and areas continue to refreeze. Residence hall entrances have been cleared and surrounding pedestrian and vehicular pathways are passable; Rams Head Dining Hall entrances have also now been cleared. Crews are now focusing on main campus, where they have cleared about a third of priority building entrances and are working to address primary pedestrian routes and bus stops.

Staff and students who are on campus should continue to be extremely cautious. Areas that have previously been cleared continue to refreeze and sidewalks and parking lots may be slick. Snow and ice have begun sliding off building rooftops.

The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (OWRR) has suspended waste collection services for Monday, Jan. 9. Collection of trash, animal bedding, compost, cardboard, and other recycling from dumpsters, compactors, carts and indoor locations will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 10 if conditions allow.

Sunday, Jan. 8

UPDATE 3:30 p.m: The University will activate Condition 2 (Suspended Operations) of its adverse weather plan starting at 9 p.m. tonight (Sunday, Jan. 8) until further notice based on current information available from the National Weather Service, local law enforcement and transit officials. Please visit alertcarolina.unc.edu for more information.

UPDATE 3:00 p.m.: Snow and ice are sliding off some rooftops on campus. Please be cautious and remain alert if you are walking on campus today.

UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: Visitors coming to campus today for athletic events should use extreme caution. Please park in designated areas only and use only cleared walkways and stairs. Due to low temperatures, refreezing has occurred in many areas, so please use caution when walking across parking lots and on sidewalks. Entrance B at the Dean E. Smith Center will be closed due to icy conditions.

Crews will begin clearing priority areas on Sunday per the Facilities Services Snow Removal Map which identifies priority entrances, sidewalks, roadways and parking lots and the order in which they will be addressed.

Saturday, Jan. 7

UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: The Men’s Basketball game against NC State scheduled for this evening has been postponed to Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1:00 p.m.

UPDATE 2:00 p.m.: Crews have cleared and salted lots and walkways around the Dean E. Smith Center. Those attending tonight’s Men’s Basketball game should park only in designated lots, and guests should use caution while driving and walking on campus.
