Project Description
Coates Building is a 10,000 gross square foot building originally constructed in 1938. Due to its poor condition and lack of compliance with building and life safety codes, roughly half the building has not been in use for several years. The building contains office and meeting spaces for the College of Arts and Sciences. The project is intended to address significant deferred maintenance throughout the facility including building envelope, architectural finishes, building systems, life safety, accessibility, and abatement as well as explore opportunities for programmatic upgrades. A small addition at the rear of the building to accommodate accessibility and egress requirements is possible. As the property sits within the boundaries of two historic districts, approval of the NC State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) as well as the Town of Chapel Hill's Historic District Commission may be part of the scope of the project.
Design Services include Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Abatement, Historic Preservation, Audio-Visual and Acoustical Design.
Current project authority is for advance planning only. The selected firm may be retained through full design and construction at the university's option.
Please contact the Project Manager for the full project brief.
