Frequently Asked Questions
Effective July 1, 2012, we began charging $8 per box for the collection, shredding and recycling of confidential paper. Please see our confidential paper webpage for additional info.
- Will we start being charged for indoor recycling services?
- Does this mean that we will have to start paying for trash, cardboard and other recycling services?
*With the exception of Chase and Lenoir which will now have a charge associated with cardboard compactor collection.
The only customers who directly pay for trash and recycling services (other than confidential paper) are receipt-funded customers. These are customers such as Athletics, Carolina Dining Services, DLAM (Dept. of Laboratory Animal Medicine), Housing and Residential Education, Parking and Transportation, CoGen (charges for electricity), Student Stores and other customers who are funded via financial transactions. There are also buildings funded via the endowment or leased spaces. Almost all other buildings are funded via appropriations by the state (or are called state-funded.) OWRR receives funds to pay for trash and recycling services at state-appropriated buildings.
So only customers who are already getting “trash” bills will be affected by the new rates for dumpster, compactor and rolloff collection of trash and recyclables. Indoor recycling is included in charges for dumpsters, compactors and rolloffs—whether the building is appropriated or receipt-funded. Therefore, no one will “start getting billed” for indoor recycling collection.
- Why are you changing your rates?
- The modest increase to rates this year is necessary to keep up with the rising fuel and operation costs.
