What is environmental justice?

Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Fair treatment means no group of people should bear a disproportionate share of the negative environmental consequences resulting from industrial, governmental and commercial operations or policies.

Why is it important?

Environmental justice is an important part of the struggle to improve and maintain a clean and healthful environment, especially for those who have traditionally lived, worked and played closest to the sources of pollution. With examples such as the NoDAPL protest earlier this year which sparked environmental change, it is important to remember that your voice, vote, and beliefs matter.

Especially in politically focused events, strive to make them non-partisan. It is more effective to spread awareness without affiliations because there will be no abrasion or frustration, and that means more education and outreach for sustainably focused goals!

What could your program look like?

  • Have your residents come together and call Local Representatives and Congressmen/women to raise awareness for an environmental problem in our community! Food is always a great incentive.
  • Raise awareness for an environmental cause that you are passionate about!
  • Partner with the Social Justice Advocate of your community to make a program that incorporates intersectionality and inclusiveness with environmental matters! How do different neighborhoods with populations of colored people get affected differently by environmental problems?
  • Invite a group, organization, professor, or spokesperson to come talk to your residents about environmental problems across the globe and how they are handled!
