Two plumbers from Facilities Services traveled to UNC Asheville in October to assist in critical recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. Philip Sykes and Chris Norris worked alongside technicians from other UNC System universities to restore essential water infrastructure and support the campus community.

The team’s mission was to flush out 54 campus buildings to ensure water safety and functionality once the campus had water service restored. Working alongside maintenance personnel from UNC Asheville, and supported by technicians from East Carolina, UNC Charlotte, and Appalachian State, Sykes and Norris participated in a System collaborative disaster response.

Over three days, the team worked 8-10 hour shifts, focusing on:

  • Flushing campus buildings to eliminate contaminants.
  • Repairing broken water lines and plumbing fixtures.
  • Delivering critical bottled water supplies.
  • Ensuring safe water systems for restrooms, water fountains and building climate control.

Despite challenging communication conditions — which Sykes addressed by bringing personal two-way radios — the team remained focused and efficient, pausing only briefly for lunch each day.

The team’s efforts did not go unnoticed. UNC Asheville Chancellor Kimberly van Noort personally thanked Sykes and Norris for their service. Both volunteers said they felt honored to support the Asheville campus community during a critical time of need.

“We were able to get the water back up to the UNC Asheville campus quicker than anticipated,” Sykes noted. “I am so thankful to have the opportunity to help.”
