What is Confidential Paper Recycling?

Confidential paper recycling is similar to office paper recycling, but it allows University departments to recycle confidential documents in a secure manner. Confidential information may include social security numbers, personnel and payroll records, academic records, or medical information.

Our HIPAA-trained employees will pick up boxed confidential paper from your office.  We then bring it to our locked warehouse until we have enough for a shipment. We contract with Durham-based Shimar Recycling to securely shred and bale the paper for recycling.

Paper that has already been shredded can be collected as part of our regular indoor recycling collection service.  Shredded paper must be bagged separately using CLEAR plastic bags. Bags of shredded paper can be placed next to a mixed paper recycling bin in your building.

How Do I Recycle Confidential Paper?

  1. Place confidential paper in boxes and label as “Confidential Recycling.” Use copier paper boxes or ones of similar size (no larger than 24″ long x 10″ high x 12″ deep). OWRR will recycle the used cardboard boxes. We do not provide boxes. Please note that OWRR will not be able to pick up confidential paper if it contains any of the following contaminants: metal hanging folders, binder clips, carbon paper, photographs, rubber bands, or transparencies.
  2. Keep all confidential materials secure while storing or waiting for a pickup.
  3. Request a confidential paper pickup using our online confidential paper pickup request. Effective July 1, 2012, there is a charge of $10 per box for pickup and destruction of confidential paper. Please include the following information:
    • Contact Name
    • Customer ID
    • Phone and email address
    • Location with Room Number
    • # of boxes of Materials
    • Special Instructions, if needed

Confidential paper is collected on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For a high volumes of confidential materials (20 or more boxes) or for material that is overly contaminated, we recommend on-site collection or destruction using one of the contractors available in the Chapel Hill area (below).
