For confidential documents and sensitive information, please use our confidential paper removal services rather than in-office shredding. Shredding and bagging materials can cause messes and delay other services.

Shredded paper consists of printed or unprinted shavings, cuttings and otherwise colored or white shredded paper. Because shredded paper is small and takes up a large amount of space, it is a difficult material to process at a material recovery facility.

For this reason, the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling collects shredded paper separately from other forms of mixed paper. Shredded materials must be bagged in clear bags for collection and transport.

Bags of shredded paper should be placed next to the closest recycling station to be picked up during your building’s regular service. Unbagged material will not be collected.

Shredded paper should be reserved for confidential materials such as:

  • Social Security numbers
  • Personnel and payroll records
  • Academic records
  • Medical information

Shredded material is collected from all over campus and transported to a local facility for processing and recycling.
