The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (OWRR) has updated the process for requesting temporary recycling carts.

Effective July 11, temporary recycling carts may be requested from OWRR for a minimum of two weeks to a maximum of three weeks. At the end of the request period, carts will automatically be scheduled for pickup by OWRR. The requestor will receive an email prior to the scheduled pickup as a reminder that the cart request is about to expire.

These changes in procedure are due to the high demand for temporary carts across campus. By implementing these operational changes, OWRR hopes to:

  • Increase the availability of temporary carts to the campus community.
  • Reduce the number of carts on campus that are held for long periods of time.
  • Reduce the number of collection visits by consolidating collections within a scheduled time frame.
  • Increase communications with campus customers regarding their cart requests.

Departments needing temporary recycling carts should submit an online temporary cart request. Temporary carts are to be used for office clean outs and for large volumes of recyclable paper, booklets, hardcover books and other acceptable forms of paper products. All paper placed in carts must be free of paper clips, binder clips, plastic binders and rubber bands. Carts should not be kept inside locked rooms or offices that will inhibit OWRR’s ability to service or pickup these containers.

Departments should not use temporary carts for confidential paper services and should place a separate request for confidential paper recycling.

For questions about requesting temporary carts or other recycling services, please contact the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling at recycling@facilities.unc.edu.
