Containers and Equipment Overview
For related information, refer to the UNC-Chapel Hill Design Guidelines, Chapter V: Sections 02475 Trash and Recyclables Collection System, 02870 Site Furnishings, 11170 Waste Handling Equipment, and 12300 Custom Cabinets and Millwork.
It is the responsibility of the project to budget or reserve funds for the equipment and work with OWRR to ensure that the equipment is ordered, shipped and installed prior to occupancy. Trash and cardboard dumpsters, rolloff containers, and walkway containers (Section 02870 Site Furnishings) are examples of the type of equipment for which this needs to happen.
Horizontal compactors are considered part of the building systems. Compactors are to be included in the project budget, planning, design and requirements (Section 11170 Waste Handling Equipment).
Indoor cabinets may be built by the project or ordered by the project (Section 12300 Custom Millwork and Cabinets). Funding for the cabinets must either be part of the project budget or reserves. It is the project’s responsibility to design, order, receive and install the cabinets.
Some equipment such as standard indoor recycling bins and outdoor carts will be provided by OWRR at no charge.
This information supports and supplements information included in the UNC-Chapel Hill Design Guidelines—specifically, Chapter V: Section 02475 A and Section 11170. Contact Shawn Ellis at 919-201-2832 for more information.

General
Recycling cabinets are used in public areas where a more formal appearance is needed. These areas include hallways (outside classrooms and auditoriums), lobbies, pre-function areas, lounges and other areas where people congregate.
There are three ways to get these recycling cabinets.
- The project can build them to OWRR’s requirements.
- They can be built and supplied by UNC-Chapel Hill Carpentry Shop.
- The project can order them from a local cabinet maker.
It must also be clear as to how the cabinets will be supplied–ordered from an outside supplier, built by the project, or ordered from the UNC-Chapel Hill carpentry shop. (See installation and notes.)
Reserve Amount
Indoor cabinets may be built by the project or ordered by the project. Funding for the cabinets must either be part of the project budget or reserves. It is the project’s responsibility to design, order, receive and install the cabinets. The project design team must complete this table for custom recycling cabinets and include it in this section along with other information about the cabinet requirements listed in Section 12300
When cabinets are built as part of project
The project must purchase the inside containers for each cabinet. Rubbermaid Brute 32 gallon containers should be used. Note: no lids are needed.
When cabinets are ordered thru the UNC-Chapel Hill Carpentry Shop
There will be an hourly charge plus materials. Contact the shop supervisor for an estimate.

Installation and Other Notes
OWRR must be notified so that we can label the cabinets and add the locations to the pick-up schedule.
When ordering these bins from outside suppliers or the UNC-Chapel Hill Carpentry Shop
The project is responsible for designating space on the drawings, reserving the funds, selecting the laminates, ordering, receiving, and paying the invoice. (The supplier or carpentry shop are to install the cabinets themselves.)
OWRR is available to assist with placing the order. OWRR must be notified when the cabinets have arrived so that we can label them and get them on a pick-up schedule.
If the project plans to build cabinets
Contact Facilities Planning Project Manager.
The project is responsible for designating space on the drawings, providing detailed drawings of the cabinets (to the requirements listed here), selecting the laminates, and building and installing the cabinets.
OWRR will review the drawings to verify locations, dimensions, and details. Prior to building occupation, OWRR must be notified so that we can label the cabinets and get the location on a pick-up schedule.
All locations, dimensions, lid openings and finishes must be included in project documents and a copy given to OWRR before construction documents are finalized.
