The Campus Master Plan is visionary, yet practical: it provides guidance on technical topics including site capacity, ecology, transportation, and parking. These and other considerations are critical to updating the Development Plan, which manages the University’s agreements with the Town of Chapel Hill related to campus development. The University has built out much of the capacity approved in the last Development Plan, and will pursue approval of a new plan to support future needs.

Planning is an ongoing process, and the Master Plan is adjusted regularly to respond to current needs. At key moments in the University’s evolution, comprehensive planning processes have looked at the campus holistically and set a new direction. The last such plan was completed in 2019.
